The scum of humanity…
Bad day. Bad Friday. I wanna grab a hunter and lash the scum… it’s been a roller coaster of a morning. Today is the Christmas bonus day… where bonuses will be given out to everyone at work here. It’s supposed to be a happy day. 10 days before Christmas…
Rudy is the assistant network engineer. Good guy. Lazy guy. Have had problems with him a few times. But it has all be good. 4 years. For 4 years we’ve shared jokes, lunches, those mad mad email forwards, stuff…
Rudy is a good guy. Layed off this morning by my VP. 4 hours before the bonus checks are to be handed out. 10 days before Christmas.
The scum of humanity leaves me devastated. For a minute or two I did not pay any attention, as he was silently opening his drawers and his over head locker and taking the stuff out as Jose the security officer stood next to his cubicle with his head down. Jose and Rudy have been drinking buddies. It’s an uncomfortable position for Jose to be in. His duty is to escort Rudy out of the office. 4 hours before the bonus checks are handed out. 10 days before Christmas.
It took about two minutes for the thought to sink in… I go up and walked out of my office towards Rudy’s cubicle…
What’s up guys?
“They’ve let me go… ”
They let Rudy go! They let him go! What if he didn’t want to leave? What if he loves working here? Would “they let him go”… he doesn’t wanna go… WHY THE FUCK CAN’T YOU SAY “WE KICKED HIM OUT… WE FIRED HIM BECAUSE WE ARE SAVING A FEW UPPER MANAGEMENT NECKS HERE”… They fired Rudy. 4 hours before the bonus checks are handed out. 10 days before Christmas.

The software programmer is another scum I would like to beat up, tie him, beat him more and more and more up. SELFISHNESS is not a word that could encompass the scum.
I leave a message about Rudy being fired on my Network Engineer’s home phone, since he is on vacation. You assistant just got fired.
Alex thinks I am joking. He calls the software scum. The scum is laughing… HA HA HA… I didn’t know that… HA HA HA… I’m not concerned… HA HA HA… I’m not bothered… HA HA HA… I don’t really care… HA HA HA… Well he deserved it… HA HA HA…
Evil thy twin lives in my office. The Software scum programmer. I have this intense rage to smack his face with a baseball bat… are you so deeply drowned in “I ME MYSELF” that you can’t spare a single moment to feel for the guy… A guy who’s worked here for over 7 years… whereas you have been here for under a year… still working as an assistant software engineer at an age of 40+… Can’t you see the devil, the evil in you? You are one of the first who runs for help when you are stuck with a problem… why should anyone help you… you blood sucking heartless asshole??? Why can’t you shed a drop of emotion for Rudy. Fired. 4 hours before the bonus checks are handed out. 10 days before Christmas.
Bigger Scums sit behind the doors labelled “VP” and “CFO”… the VP is already interviewing another guy who will replace Rudy. Does the guy know he’ll be sitting on a chair… that was used by a person who gave 7 years of his life to the company?
Rudy, where are you? Probably driving home with the brown cardboard box filled with 7 years of his stuff… the family pictures, the coffee mugs, those CDs, the books, the gifts given to him by others in office… memories of 7 years all trashed inside a 12inch by 12inch brown box… probably resting in the backseat of his car… 4 hours before the bonus checks are handed out. 10 days before Christmas.
This is one Friday Masala, that just doesn’t taste good… the scum of humanity dancing right in front of me… 4 hours before the bonus checks are handed out… 10 days before Christmas…

That’s gut-wrenching stuff man. Can totally picturize the scenario as I have been witness to it. I have seen people in their late 40s literally crying like babies on their way out and it’s not a pleasant sight.
I have an incident I would like to share here. It happened in a company where I had worked a few years ago. They had a few hundred people working in one of their branches across the country and they wanted to shut it down as a part of their cost-cutting strategies. But that’s not the bad part! The way it was shut down was downright barbaric! Wanna know how?
Well, one fine morning, all the employees at that branch were told to assemble in their cafeteria. The big screen television came to life and some loser from the “top management” informed the employees over the video call that they were all going to out of job!

Oz, I have shared the same experience with couple of co-workers in different companies. It was the second time I experienced this that I vowed to myself that whenever I become leader / supervisor of a team I will never ever fire people in such manner. If they need to go it will in a very amicable manner and each one will have enough time given to look for another job.
Glad to say I have keep that commitment to myslef till date and hope to continue till I am working.
This kind of nonsene only happens in the most advance country in the world the USA.
Sad, very sad.

Oz,
I know this feeling so well. Somehow, in all selfishness, I thank god that I did not have to face it and pray that I dont have to…
But, i have been on the other side..I have had to fire people because someone up the ladder did not have the balls to do it themselves. “you handle it”…
I have seen people who have worked years and really given up on their family lives to ensure that the company’s work gets done. People who spent holidays in office so that materials are despatched, so that printouts are taken for some scumbag VP who is giving a fuckall presentation…and so on. I have seen programmers who have shown unheard of passion for their jobs getting fired since the company wanted to “cut costs”. I was a part of a company that got sold - the term was asset acquisition. The best part was that three people who had no clue as to who did what, sat and decided whom to retain. And they did it quite fast since two of them had a flight to catch.
Scum, yes - the world is full of such people. Its unfair and unjust and its a bitch. But, like cowards, we just wish it doesnt happen to us,feel bad for the ones who got laid off and get on with our lives. And, everyday, we think of these people and wonder where they are and what they are doing.
The worst experience was when I was working for a 300M$ co. that undertook a major cost cutting exercise and used to lay off workers everyday. The workers used to dread coming to office. There were people who used to feel scared getting into office incase the HR man was waiting with a letter for them. The worst was when the HR man was fired.
