Crying Game : Scenes that ripped the heart - 1

A different turn… a different take… saw Saaransh for the nth time and still cried over those permanently etched in memory scenes… what gives… About to shut the desktop for a Thanksgiving Holiday tomorrow. Have to come back to work on Friday!!! DAMN IT… I’ll be in office while the rest of America on Friday Morning will be going in for that yearly Black Friday (no not Anurag Kashyap’s movie) shopping…

Guess I’ll start this list for you, dear readers to pour in more movies that break your heart and turn on the faucet that lets breaks those tear dams… List is no particular order…

Saaransh

If you and I were just born yesterday and shown Saaransh, we would refuse to believe that it’s Anupam Kher’s first movie.

Two scenes that get to you.

1. Anupam Kher at the customs office running all around to get his dead son’s possessions that have been shipped to him from America. He refuses to pay under the table to the “agent”, instead stands in the line for hours, is sent back at the window by the customs officer who does not find his papers in order… he’s desperate and barges right into the senior customs office… to say something like …

“You officers don’t know how to talk to people… I’ve been standing the line for the entire day and they still rudely threw me out refusing to give me these things (hands the documents to the senior official)… ”

How intelligently Mahesh Bhatt (the director) makes the customs official react to bring the best out of the scene… the official goes … (rudely) “How did you come in… please get out of my office… if you want your TV, fridge whatever shipped from America, you should come with proper documents…”

And the masterpiece of a line by Anupam who snaps back

“I HAVEN’T COME HERE FOR A TV… I HAVE COME HERE FOR MY SON’S ASHES… CAN’T A FATHER GET HIS SON’S ASHES … OR FOR THAT - DO I HAVE TO PAY A CORRUPT AGENT OR KEEP STANDING IN THE LINE FOR DAYS TOGETHER??… ”

2. Anupam barges into the chief ministers office in an attempt to save the Soni Razdan from being forced to get an abortion by a local politician (Nilu Pule)…

He steps in and blurts out at the chief minister angrily laying out his frustrations… all the while standing in front of him… and in the end goes…

“NO NO NO… THERE IS NO HOPE FOR THIS COUNTRY…”

The chief minister (guess who he was?) silent all this time, speaks for the first time… and says something like… “Today, I have been deeply saddened Sir… because as a kid, I was your student and when I had robbed somebody’s pen in school you had punished me … as I cried and prayed to let me go as there was no hope for me…”… “do you know what you had said Sir?… There is always hope…”…

There is always hope that someday someone will have the courage to make such another hard hitting movie.

Amitabh’s death scene in Shakti

The friction between Amitabh and his father, Dilip Kumar, reaches a climax when in an attempt to escape the cops Amitabh runs on the runway of the airport. His father, is a cop and with tears in his eyes, draws his gun out… screaming at his son “Vijay stop or I will have to shoot”… Amitabh keeps running and is shot.

When Dilip Kumar breaks down as he holds the dying Amitabh in his arms… they talk to each other as Amitabh is gasping for his last of the breaths… when he says

“Dad… I’ve always loved you all my life…”

Dilip Kumar responds… “I love you to my son… I love you too…”

And the punchline… “… Then why… didn’t… you ever…mention this… Dad…”

Ripped my heart out… I cry on this scene even today… these days when they show Shakti on TV, I simply change the channels when this scene is about play.

Amitabh in Viruddh

There was a time when I felt that Amitabh couldn’t break the emotional wall of the audience because of his image, the aura of a angry, tough, man… except the death scenes there wasn’t much I remember where you could make you fetch your tissues… like Kamal Hasan could.

But in Viruddh, he broke that belief… his only child, his grown up son, has just been murdered. He sits on a park bench in complete sadness and depression. It’s early morning. Close to him are a bunch of people who are doing their early morning laughter therapy exercises, raising their hands and laughing out loud.

With oh so sad eyes, Amitabh looks at them, and then suddenly with forcefully raised hands, tries to break into a laugh… every decibel of which is dipped in heart stabbing pain…

It’s amazing to see that no one mentioned this role at any of the award ceremony functions held earlier this year.

Farida Jalal in Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gum

Oh comeon… a Karan Johar film… I must be nuts… Nah… you forget that it’s a very talented artist we are talking about here… Farida Jalal who has been acting in movies before many of us were born…

Hritik Roshan has not disclosed his true identity to Shah Rukh Khan and his family (that he is his younger brother), even though he has been living with he elder brother as a guest from India. Farida Jalal suspects it, but is quiet.

The scene…

Hritik doesn’t know how to tie his laces up and as he’s stuggling to do that (the camera focussing on his shoes) two hands come on screen helping him tie those laces up. Hritik is taken aback. He can’t allow Farida Jalal to tie his shoes… and asks her first politely “let it be… please let it be…” and it then grows to guilt and irritation… “Daeja… let it be”… he just called her by the name he used to call her as a kid… identity revealed…

Farida immediately gets up and with tears in her eyes, choked throat… and shaking hands, she ever so slowly touch his face to just say… “My son…” her crying doesn’t allow any words to come out…

For some odd reason… I just break down on this scene… each time every time… I don’t understand why… my dog (as long as he was with me) never understood this… and I think neither would Karan Johar…

More to follow soon…

Oz, the climax of Sadma fucks my brain all the time. I got so engrossed in that movie that I screamed to Sridevi ” Thats the why who saved you from getting rammed each night & today you dont recognise him. Move your fucking butt out of the train & embrace him”

Thank god it was only me in that room at that time.:d

  3. Full2 Faltu Says:

Oh I love the scene here.

Nice topic to write about. Shouldn’t this be PFC?

Anand also had good scenes. The last “babumoshai” scene. Matron coming to meet Anand the last time.

Even Mili had some good scene. Now I need to go and search for Mili in my DVD collection today.

    Oz: Nice post
    But Hey!
I wonder how long u will deny some movies which creates ripples in the sea of your heart?
Though critics and modern cinema (ala modern art) lovers will reject them as tear jerker or commericial masala films.

Apart from mentioned in posts and comments few additional are also there.

Muqqadar Ka Sikandar: Dying scene of AB, and his insistence to Vinod Khanna to sing the song- jindagi to bewafa hai ek din jayegee.
Sharabi: AB’s crying when Om prakash is dying in hospital.

Mashaal: Crying Dilip Kumar while Waheeda Rehman is dying on roadside.

Silsila: AB leaving Jaya saying Dukh to is baat ka hai ki anjane mein tumhe takleef pahunchayee. and Jaya tries to stop her cry.

Lamhe: Sridevi crying and running towards Deepka Malhotra after her dad is died

Bawarchee: climax when Rajesh Khanna is seen by Jaya Bhaduri and he ran away and they both meet on road.

Janam: Kumar Guarav gets reward on stage while his father is present.

    Sadma : climax

Mahanadi: When Kamal Hasan sees his daughter in brothel and breakes down there and tries to save her. Another gem performance by Kamal

Khamoshi: Wahida Rehman sees Dharmendra coming to give his wedding card. Rajesh Khanna sees a mad wahida in climax

    Koshish : many scenes

    and many more films!

How can I forget Hazaron Khwaisien Aisi?! That movie proper fucked up me mind. That Saurabh Shukla scene (he is beating up Shiney Ahuja) was just…

i hated every single characters in that movie, but loved the movie. strange…

  8. Rk Says:

    My picks
    Sadma climax.
    Anand towards climax

Not too much but senti over few scenes like the one in HDDCS (Salman talking his mom Helen in the field), Sapnay some scene..

  9. kartik krishnan Says:

Sadmaand mahanadi all the way for me ..

Also another kamal hassan classic is Appu raja (just the performances and not the stupid dubbing) …

the scene where Appu realises the girl is marrying someonelse and he’s just there as a witness for the registered marriage… You see his eyes … they are brimming with tears ..and so were mine … when i saw that scene

  10. The Guy Next Door Says:

Nice post - One of those where you wonder how come I didnt think of it before.

    Few of my favs -

K3G - When SRK meets his mom in the shopping mall

Schindlers List - Last scene where Oscar breaks down and says he could have saved another person by selling his brooch and 10 by selling his car and so on

Naam - When Pankaj Udhas sings “Chitthi Aayi Hain”

Swades - When SRK breaks down when he sess the little boy selling water on the station

Will post more when I remember. Do you mind if I write on the same subject on my blog ?

  11. t! Says:

The first two that come to mind?

    1. The wedding scene in Devdas. That one makes me bawl like a baby every time, and I have probably seen the movie about five times.

    2. The conclusion of Afterglow, a little known movie that I am in love with. Julie Christie’s breakdown at the end is painful, and shows why she is such a remarkable actress….

I cried the first time I saw the Casablanca director’s cut on the big screen - the scene where the population of Rick’s cafe breaks into singing the French national anthem. What a powerful statement of solidarity and the power of nationalism and the alienation of the expatriates. I have wanted to rent this to see if it is still as powerful on video,…

  12. SK Says:

    Mine are somewhat odd.

    1) Do aankhen barah haath (Old). When the jailor dies trying to save his prisoners in the end.

    2) Do Bigha Zameen. When Balraj Sahni goes out to work inspite of having high fever.

    3) Main aazad hoon. Ab suicide jump from building.

  13. Subhash Says:

Big (and recent) fan of yours OZ.

I remember the chief minister sequence a little differently (it was a longg time ago though). The chief minister after Anupam Kher vents outs says: Sir, In all of your teaching carrier, I think you hit only one child for saying there’s no hope. That child was me…

Among other movies scenes that come to my mind are:
    1. Sholay. a)When Sanjeev Kumar returns to see his family dead. b) Amitabh dying and Jaya reaching there.
    2. Ankush: When Nisha Singh commits suicide. I watched when I was in school and have never forgiven the writer for this. How can a person who gave hope to hopeless do this…

  14. sophocles Says:

OZ - good to see such a post from you after so many days! Like old times…
    Anyway, here’s my list

    1) No. 1 for me is K3g - last scene when SRK comes to meet AB and AB has his back towards the camera and is looking at a family portrait. When he turns around, his eyes are full of tears and they are streaming down his cheeks. It broke my heart and AB’s subsequent perforrmance was brilliant.

    2) Swades - ( Guy next door - this one is one of my favs also) - the train scene when SRk looks at the waterboy and cant hold himself back.

    3) Kamal Hassan and Nadira in Saagar - when Kamal hassan is crying his guts out in front of her and says that - Mrs, D’souza yeh mere saath hi kyon hota hai?

    4) The climax of tere naam

    5) Viruddh - when the part when AB and sharmila come to know of Johns death.

    6) Ek duje ke liye - when rati and kamal commit suicide.

    7) schindlers list - when u seek the little girl in pink as a dead body in the entire pile of bodies.

many more that I cant remember now.. but seems like there are great movies that moved us all…

  15. cliff Says:

    Deewar:

AB and PB in bed, she looks at his hand and asks him about the tattoo which says” Mera Baap chor hai”, she says why don’t you get rid of it with plastic surgery.. and he states something to the tune of ” Yeh zakhm is duniya ki koi plastic suregery hahin mita sakthi”. Only AB could deliver that with a dead pan face and be so effective.

  16. Nadeem Says:

Excellent post Oz. Here are a few from me…..

    1) Anand when Kaka dies in the end and AB tries to get him to talk.

    2) Sholay when AB dies.

    3) Naam when Sanjubaba dies in the hospital.

    4) Kaash - when the little kid is dying.

    5) Couple of scenes in Swades.

    6) Border - Few scenes in climax.

    7) Several scenes in Lakshya (I am big on patriotism, hence)

Can’t remember any other from the top of my mind right now……Though am not sure how any scene from K3G could get anyone to tears….

  17. carl Says:

Safar and Aradhana were good terjerkers too

  18. Shailesh Limbachiya Says:

    Hi,

Please consider some of the scenes that ripped my heart-

Ghatak- The scene between sunny deol and Amrish puri when doctor tells sunny to take his father back to home.

Damini- When rishi kapoor says “mujhe garv hai ki me damini ka pati hoon” although Rishi kapoor did not get any appraisal for that superb performance.

Anand- climax when anand dies and in background the tune of “koi hota jisko apna hum apna keh sakte yaaro(mere apne).

Satya- In the climax, when charkravorthy bags urmila to open the door

Mili- when Dharmendra scolds a cameraman and camaraman tells the reality of bollywood.

Baaghaban- The long speech of AB. first time I saw pindrop silence in that speech about 10 min long.

Swades- the sccene between SRK and waterboy at the station and scene at the farmer’s hut.

Khakee- Watch the facial expressions of AB when Tanuja slaps him and flashes of cameras on AB’s face. what a towering performance.

Border- the climax song of mere bhai, mere dushman.

Vaastav- When dedh futiya gives money to his mother first time and tells his father”apni budhi ko kabhi hath nahi lagane ka”

Aur bhi bahot saare scenes hai par waqt ki kami ki wajah se likh paana muskil hai.

    bye
