Do you have a “dot” in your Gmail?
I’ve been receiving a lot of emails in my “personal” account. Yet strangely many of the emails do not belong to me. I swear.
Cause there is no reason an attorney would email me the strategy to escape “alimony”. For the simple reason that I’ve never been married. Secondly I would never enter into marriage without a Pre-Nup.
Then a famous porn site confirms by email a 12 month membership and reminds me that my username is BigDickBangaroo and password is : ItisHard247 - which is good, cause now I can watch porn for free at someone’s expense for the next 12 months. I don’t mind calling myself BigDickBangaroo for the next 12 months.
I don’t know of any friend who emails me the plan for visiting the hot strip clubs in New York the moment he and I land in New York from wherever we are “supposed” to be living at present. I’ve never been to NY, don’t have any immediate plans and I hate strip clubs.
Well many more points to prove that half of the emails in my inbox simply belong to someone else.
The reason for receiving such misdirected emails, was found out exactly at 7:30am this morning, by yours truly.
That person and I have our email accounts at Google’s Gmail service.
Let’s say our names are John Doe.
My email account is JohnDoe@gmail.com
The other person’s email account is John.Doe@gmail.com

Notice the “.” in the other person’s account name.
In a Google’s beta Gmail world - John.Doe is the same person as JohnDoe. But - JohnDoe may not be the same guy John.Doe
In other words - if an email is sent to John.Doe@gmail.com - two people may receive that email - John.Doe - the person it was intended for, and JohnDoe - the person it was absolutely not intended for.
Hence in this awesome beta world I’ve been invited to a “pot” (gaanja) party this weekend at someone called Peedee’s house.
Here’s Google’s official page that mentions that they don’t recognize dots in email account names.
Am I receiving someone else’s email?
Gmail doesn’t recognize dots (.) as characters within a username. This way, you can add and remove dots to your username for desired address variations. messages sent to your.username@gmail.com and y.o.u.r.u.s.e.r.n.a.m.e@gmail.com are delivered to the same inbox, since the characters in the username are the same.Keep in mind that hyphens (-) and underscores (_) can’t be used in a Gmail address. Also, usernames are case insensitive, so it doesn’t matter if you enter upper case or lower case letters.
If you created your account with a dot in your username and you wish you hadn’t, you can change your ‘Reply-to address.’ To change your reply-to address:
1. Click ‘Settings’ at the top of any Gmail page.
2. Enter your username@gmail.com without a dot in the ‘Reply-to address’ field.
3. Click ‘Save Changes.’When you log in to Gmail, you need to enter any dots that were originally defined as part of your username.
