Aray O Sambha
Meet Sushant Singh. You’ve seen him in Satya, Kaun, Jungle, Samay, D and many other movies.
Probably his most talked about role will be the one he’s shooting for right now. That of “Sambha”
Yep. Sushant is playing Sambha in Ram Gopal Varma’s remake of Sholay
So what does the new Sambha look like? Here’s what Mumbai Mirror found out
Sushant Singh’s Sambha in Ramu’s Sholay is totally different from the original one. He has a heavily tanned complexion, short spiky hair, a turned-down moustache and a scar on his eyebrow. And he wears a black T-shirt and green cargo pants for his role.
Though there is no news where he will be sitting… If you remember Sambha sat on a high rock with his rifle. And if you aren’t aware, RGV’s remake has Sholay set in Bombay. So putting two and two together I am guessing the new Sambha’s patented sitting position will be on a water tank of some tall building in Bombay….. though I hope not!

Last year, after knowing the decision of RGV I had written following on a blog. RGV knows what to do but before knowing his selection of actors I had tried to think who can play which role.:-
Remaking of Sholay: If I were to cast actors for roles !
This is the time for some remakings in the Bollywood. While Farhaan Akhtar is working on Don,
Ram Gopal Varma is under the process of remaking classic Sholay. His declaration about his decision to remake Sholay has created a big curiosity. He has delivered good films like Shiva, Rangeela, Satya, Company and Sarkar and has already attained a reputation in hindi cineworld which few of his contemporary can cherish. But his Sholay is bound to be compared with the original Sholay.
He has guts and this is clear by his attempt to remake the most popular hindi film. He is conscious too as he has recently said that he would not opt the casting which audience expect and if he was following that tradition than he should have gone for Abhishek as Jai, Sunny or Bobby Deol as Veeru, Esha as Basanti and Son of Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh.
He has already made sensation by decalring that Amitabh Bachchan would be his Gabbar. Another shocking news was that he is going to cast Abhishek as Veeru. He is successful in keeping curiosity alive. His Sholay will be worth watching and who knows will be better from original in all senses.
Few questions arise here.
If he casts Amitabh as Gabbar and Abhishek as Veeru then will he mend some dialogues where there were exchange of abuses between Veeru and Gabbar? Its really odd to see Abhishek to shout” Kutte mein tera khoon pee jaunga” or ” Haramjade mein tujhe jinda nahin chhorunga”.
Not sure Abhishek can say these words to Amitabh no matter if they are playing some of the famous roles of hindi cinema.
Perhaps everybody in India will be having desire to make his own Sholay and RGV has taken the lead step and eyes are set on him. But If I were to remake Sholay or if I were having any say in casting of actors then I would like to go with following options. Most of the actors will be under the pressure of doing at par with the actors of original Sholay and thats why actors should be original in their ability. We will go who has potential and there may be more than 2 choice for some roles and ultimately screen test( stars like any such test in India?) should decide in such cases.
Just to recall - original Sholay had four heros or say 4 male central characters.
Thakur, Gabbar Singh, Jai and Veeru.
1. Thakur - Amitabh Bachchan would make excellent Thakur(2nd choice - Nana Patekar).
Mohan Lal has hindi language problem and it was much evident in Company where
he was safe as he was playing south Indian IPS officer but here Thakur is typical
Hindi belt land lord and police officer.
2. Jai - Abhishek Bachchan is the best bet for the role of Jai. In Sarkar he has proven his
ability to express through his eyes and from his silence and these 2 ingredients are
must to play the role of Jai( especially after Amitabh essayed ther ole so perfectly
in the original). Only Abhishek can express Jai’s silent love towards Radha ( Role
played by Jaya Bhaduri in original). He has mischivious traits also to handle
Basanti’s glibness. Abhishek has everything to play Jai and he will be better choice
for Jai than for Veeru.
3. Veeru - Veeru is really tough with present lot of actors. Aamir Khan can match the comedy skill of Dharmji and he can match his anger also but he does not fit in macho image of Dharamji. Bobby Deol(wht abt water tank scene), Akshaya Kumar and Saif ali khan( scenes after Jai is killed?). Hritik may be a good choice.
Gabbar - Sunny Deol, Irfan Khan, Manoj Bajpai, and Kamal Hasan should be considered. They can match skill of Late Amjad Khan and. Sunny Deol has anger, voice and body to match the demand of the role and his eyes are as expressive as of Abhishek’s. Irfan and Manoj can give new turn to the role and perhaps Kamal can feel rejuvenated with the role of biggest villain of hindi cinema and gives his best ever performance.
5. Basanti - Urmila Martondkar, Isha Koppikar, Preiti Jinta, Priyanka Chopra should be given
chance for screen test as they can match glibness and beauty of Hema Malini in the
role of Basanti.
6. Radha - Rani Mukherjee, Esha Deol, Kareena kapoor, and Aishvarya Rai should be called for
screen test. Esha deol can be surprise actor as she can manage pre marital youhthfulness of Radha and later can essay serious look of widowhood also .
7. Jailor - Arshad Varsi should make different jailor than Asrani. He has potential to give
different turm to this comic role. Raghuvir Yadav , Paresh Rawal and Boman Irani
should also be considered.
8. Surma Bhopali - Rajpal Yadav and Johni Lever should fight for this role. If Om Puri become ready for this short role then he can give stunning performance. (remember his kakka ji kahin)
9. Maulvi - A.K Hangal had played this role beautifully. If Nasseruddin Shah, Nana Patekar and Anupam Kher become ready for this role then it will be again worth watching role.
10. Mausi - ( Leela Mishra in original). Surekha Sikri, Kiron kher,Farida Jalal, Nikhat Kajmi
11. Son of maulvi- ( Sachin in original) - Shahid Kapur, Jimi Shergil
12. Barbar in Jail - ( Keshto Mukherjee in original) - Irfan( comedian)
13. Jalal Agha’s role - Actor has to sing Mahbuba Mahbuba and any big actor can be ready for
this item number. Jacky Shroff or Anil Kapur can bring vitality to this song. Fardeen Khan can also be considered for this item no.
14. Helen’s role - Its another item role and so many actresses will be ready to dance on
Mahbuba Mahbuba.
15. Thakur’s servant - ( Sayen Kappu in original) , If Anupam Kher does not play Maulvi then he is good choice for this important role

i don’t think Ramu would be stupid enough to set it in some village. He himself said that new sholay would be different and set in mumbai. For starters, obviously Basanti isnt gonna be a tangaawaali or a rick driver or a cab driver !!!
I think it will be like Shiva ‘remade’. I mean the ‘characters’ were the same except that the setting and the mileu was different from the previous original Shiva.
Rk - wow .. pretty much like the ideal cast …. kya baat hai !!! … must say u have really imagined/thought about these chractor-actor combinations a lot …

- Kartik, there is no Basanti in this new Sholay.
October 6th, 2006 at 7:12 am
oh yeah oz i completely forgot …
there is no basanti …
Funny who wil lsay the classic line
“mujhe befizool baat karney ki aadat nahin hai”
And who will this be addressed to ??
“Tumhara naam kya hai basanti ??”
LOL

Thakur doesn’t necessarily have to be from the Hindi Heartland. He could be the commissioner of police.Mohanlal would be really good in this role.
