Scoop : Kartik reveals Sanjay Gupta’s secret

I open my eyes this morning to read Kartik’s comments on the last Sanjay Gupta post at Desi Train.

I’m upgrading it to a Desi Train article status. Full Kudos to Kartik for coming out to tell us the inside scoop on the Sanjay Gupta produced Dus Kahaniyaan.

————–Sex on the beach —–Spoilers ahead—–
Oz Bhai…i don’t have a blog so i dnt know where else to post this…

Ok ok ..this might be a frustrated case of Angoor khatte hain (the grapes are sour). Or this might be a case of screw u Mr Sanjay gupta for not giving me a chance…Whatever it is ..i cant resist the temptation to see about Dus kahaniyan and think about the possibilities/lost opportunities/not having a name in Theater/cinema (im an IT guy trying to get into screenwriting and direction)

Truth: Sometime back (20′th - 30′th April ‘06) I’d called sanjay gupta’s office in connection with the production of a script that ive written (Im knocking on doors of most Bollywood producers). I caught up his assistant and he called me over his place. There he told me about Dus kahaniyan and said” the stories are finalised more or less..still if u can come up with something nice we may incorporate that !!!”. I was happy. Withing the next week i gave him 3 stories !!!
He showed me a sample story titled SEX ON THE BEACH - written by Shivani Tibrewaala (the story in which Tushar kapoor stars in the poster)
http://www.mumbaitheatreguide.com/dramas/groups/no_license_yet.asp
http://www.mumbaitheatreguide.com/dramas/artists/dt.asp?id=45

Here’s the crux of the story:
Guy is on beach. sees a hot babe. she invites him for sex into his hut (DCH-Goa types). Both go in.She says she will change and be back in 2 mins. Guy waits for her….She doesnt come even after hours. Guy goes into changing room to see her dead body. Guy is horrified..he runs out frantically and realises that the huts have disappeared. He tries to run away and suddenly realises that he is in the middle of an ocean and he is drowning. He tries his best to swim…and sees a boat coming to his rescue. he swims towards it but realises its the same dead girl beckoning him. He tries to swim away from the boat….
Next day morning his body is washed up to the shore. A crowd is gathered. A girl comes out from the crowd and gives artificial Mouth to Mouth Respiration to the Guy. He wakes up..and sees that it is the same Girl…they both walk hands in hands…and the Guy’S BODY STILL LIES THERE !!!

I might not be a very great story writer..but i can definitely come up with better stuff!!! At the cost of sounding arrogant, i think we all can probably come up with a better well formed story which ACTUALLY CONVEYS SOMETHING !!! Is this supposed to be a Kahani ????I personally feel the stories i submitted were better than Sex on the Beach. Perhaps because I’m a newcomer without a name in the industry, that the stories are read once and thrown away. What the heck i got no call from them since 2 months !!!

And yes yes…this is actually true. I can vouch for it since it happened to me. (Doubting thomases : i can give u his address, email address, office tno and a copy of email i sent). You can find out once the film is released (unless Mr gupta actually changes it)

Just an FYI…to vent my frustrations…

P.S : I hope Oz doesnt delete this post..

:Unquote

As you see Kartik I haven’t deleted anything. You spoke from your heart and Desi Train readers are always looking for such honest, fearless opinions, views and stories. I leave it upto the readers now to voice their opinion on your experience.

All the best for your success in Bollywood. And I hope one day, we’ll be writing about you and your work up here on Desi Train!!!

    Oz/Karthik,

I really feel bad for u man(karthik). The story sounds so stupid, but, as we all know the presentation of SG is something man, take any of his movies(yaya i know none are original) Kaante, Musafir, Zinda, the presentation on the screen is different. Hope he makes a good movie out of some crappy story. Taking nothing away from you Karthik, i am sure you must have come out of a great story, But just because he couldnt accept your script doesnt mean you have to publish his story before the movie is released. Dont get me wrong, i can understand your frustration.. but you shouldnt be doing this to your fellow screenwriters. Karthik. as Oz says we all pray and hope you land up in bollywood and come up with spectacular projects. Else you know there is always Oz to rip you apart:d

  2. ThE_BoSs Says:

    Don’t lose heart man.Just chill.U’ll get u’r chance soon.

  3. Jug Says:

    Hey Karthik,

Me totally with you dude ….but take a chill pill and get more focussed. Take it this way — the folks are our teachers, and we all now know “What kind of Story NOT to write”….

    Keep Bloggin….

Oz …. that was a nice gesture to allow Karthik to voice himself ….impressive !

    Cheers.

Certainly a case of Angoor Khatte Hain. Though the story “Sex on the Beach” is atrocious, I don’t understand why do we need to hear about an aspiring screenwriter’s struggles and frustrations in the industry? No filmmaker owes any newcomer a debut no matter how talented he/she is. In the hyper-commercialized world of Bollywood, aspirants better be prepared for such downright stupid and hypocritical instances. It’s the price you pay for following a dream. Get on with it. As a budding screenwriter, all you can do is to put unshakeable faith in your art and persevere. No point in going about telling “insider” stories and, maybe..maybe, fishing for sympathies from the readers.

For all we know, Dus Kahaniyan might turn out to be a mediocre film for not incorporating Karthik’s stories. Still, I don’t see what Karthik was trying to acheive by letting us in on this bit about his stories getting rejected by SJ. Quite a common experience for any struggler. Trust me, I’d know.

    Hi everyone:

    Sumeet:
Forget my possible involvement in Dus kahaniyan…I’m saying forget Kartik…forget his involvement here….Who the F**k is he anyway ??? not a journalist/media guy…a Software engineer (and) a struggling screenwriter…
You actually thought this story deserved 10- 15 mins of screen space and making a short film out of it ???? I mean if u came across this story via any other source than me…would u think this is fantastic enough ???

Presentation ..i completely agree….but look at it this way…I’ve learnt (during my interactions with an FTII director) that film making is a 3 step process:
Step 1: Matter (what do u want to say ???)
    Step 2: Manner (What technique u use …as in narrative…POV…flash forwards…How u say it)
Step 3: Method (In a nutshell…it is the technology u employ)
Problem arises wen u focus more on Manner and Method than the Matter…..

I’m myself a fan of SG in one sense…(let me complete). I like the manlyness or macho - ism in his films. Who else makes thse kind of films anyway where guys behave like guys ??? All said and done as Oz’s many posts have revealed SG might be a copycat…but look at it this way..had he not made kaante…I wldve not seen Reservoir Dogs and Tarantino movies!!! I agree with Anurag Kashyap (OZ u gotta look at this interview).
    http://www.naachgaana.com/2006/5/2/naachgaana-s-exclusive-anurag-kashyap-interview
At least he’s introducing us to hollywood (cummon !! which common man had heard of Old boy, U turn, before Zinda and Musafir came into place).

But coming back to the point. Its ok I’m kool….Thats Mr Gupta’s sensibilities and i respect him … Its just that he cldve taken a better story than - Sex on the Beach …

    Jug and The Boss:
Thanks mate…thats wat i tell myself every alternate night at the Beer bar in Kurla (Mumbai) :-) To move on !!! To stick ur craft and continue oiling/denting/painting/improving upon it.. Lets hope the day comes soon

    Anurag:
Respect ur opinion Anurag. No film maker owes anyone any explanation (Least of all Mr SG). But look at it this way…Have u seen those bombshell babes going out with absolute jerks ??? Then u think wat the f**K is wrong with me ???? Why isnt this bitch noticing me ??? Am i really worse than that jerk ??? (OZ bhai.. support me here)
I hope u understand wat I’m trying to say…And ru saying I don’t even have a right to post it on blog ??? (I’m not going to the MSM- Main stream media, am I ???)

I’m myself a fan of SG.. He cares two hoots about anyone and does wat he wants…Oh cummon he introduced me to Tarantino…I’ll be gr8ful to him for that ….

I dnt need sympathy (any self respecting artist wld agree)..at least from people I’ve never met…Wat am i going to do with sympathies ??? They dont give me creative satisfaction/money….Nor do i want to tell insider stories !!! (I’d rather concentrate on my work and try to improve it).

I just wanted to draw attention to the kind of stories that Bollywood is churning out. A country with a legacy of story tellers like Ismat Chughtai, saddat Manto, Premchand, Ruskin Bond, Amrita Preetam (and these are the recent ones only !!! I’m just talking abt the past century) and all we can come up is a Sex on the beach ????
I’m perhaps doing this more out of the respect i had (and i still do ) for Mr Gupta…Why do u think I approached him ???? If i had my way….and if this were hollywood I wldve told him on the face : Sir don’t take my story …but at least come up with a better Sex on the Beach….

That was the sole purpose of the post..actually i shldve posted it as anonymous….

Angoor khatte hain ??? shayad !!!!

Oz: Lets hope that day comes soon Buddy :-) Inshallah

  9. SANJAY GUPTA Says:

Kartik you have the story of Sex On The Beach all wrong. Feel sorry for` you buddy. Anyway, good or bad how would youlike one of your stories, eureleased to be put on the net by some frustrated jerk. You say young writers like you with no background in film dont get a chance. Someone in my office did entertain you remember. I’ve checked and they found what you wrot to be sub standard. So thats how it goes buddy. But after the way you’ve behaved do you think my office is going to trust every writer that walks in. And FYI The stories in Dus Kahaniyan are by reknowned writers such as GULZAR, JAVED SIDDIQUI, KAMLESH PANDEY, VISHAL BHARDWAJ, AMRITA PRITAM, KARTAR SINGH DUGGAL, ROALD DAHL, HAROLD PINTER amongst orthers. Now frankly my friend do you seriously think you fit in with the above? So next time a film maker is trying to do something differnt and new, maybe you could show a little more compassion. Cheers buddy and keep writing.

  10. kartik krishnan Says:

Thanks Sanjay … Wasn’t expecting u to comment … this one was a blast from the past …

I do admit i shldn’t have possibly released it on the net.. It was mistake on my part to have done that … I do wish it could’ve been undone by me …

Yes i do remember sending few short stories to ur office.. I was told they were found to be too ‘theaterical’ which is fair enough.. coz back then i was writing stuff meant for theater…

After getting the above said feedback .. I did send u two new short scripts … and one of them was actually liked by ur assistnt .. but he said he couldn’t understand it completely …. Perhaps it might’ve been my shortcoming that my script wasn’t clear enough ..

After that I wasn’t informed .. and there was no communication despite my attempts to contact ur office. I guess once I got judged by the play-ish scripts i had sent .. may be i blew my one and only one chance !!! May be that might’ve prompted the lack of communication.

I do hope the story of sex on the beach is changed … Also really good to see that u’ve got greats for Dus kahaaniyan…

Request u not to ‘distrust’ every new writer that walks into ur office.

I do write … and will wait till one fine day this ‘frustrated jerk’ may ‘fit into list’ u’ve just mentioned above

    Untill then …
    thanks for dropping by
