The Indie Scene in India

So T’s talking to me about Indie film makers (Indie film makers - those with 100% passion for cinema and 0% cash to make the movie). I haven’t seen her in a long time and we settle down at my favorite new dinner adda, Sitar restaurant which is a few blocks away from my pad. It’s Rum and Coke for me and champagne cocktail for her.

T’s quite busy with her friends in the preparations for the upcoming Indie Film Festival that is set to go off in a few months in Orange County. It’s a yearly event and she’s been knocking on the doors of producers, distributors and anyone who has had anything to do with movies. The objective is to get as many quality indie movies as possible.

The downside is that she’s ended up watching 99% trash with a mere 1% of what could be called as quality cinema. According to her observations making a movie is so cheap these days, that anyone who has a handycam, thinks they can make a movie and market it at these Indie Film Festivals.

How she survived driving down to the restaurant for dinner after having watched 30+ trashy movies in one go, is quite a mystery to me. If I was in her place I would have driven straight to the psychiatrist.

Anyways, it was quite interesting to note that she’s been meeting Independent producers and directors from India since last year’s film festival. Unfortunately her group hasn’t received “ANY” Indie Movies from India inspite of sending in many requests to quite a few of their contacts. She did receive one, but it’s not gonna make the cut to the festival.

Not sure if their message is reaching the right people back in India and Desi Indie makers in the US. Where are the people who wanna market their Indie products? Where are the Desi Indie guys?

Interesting to note that there are some quite interesting Indie movies being made in India. T passed me this link and some of the movies seem to be quite interesting.

Check this Link at IndieFlix.com. The desi movies have a brief synopis and a trailor to check out.

There’s Manasarovar, the short but touching - The Last Dance, 13th floor and a few others.

Good, Bad or Trash. Its high time Online Movie Fanatics, Bloggers and Discussion Board enthusiasts gave some attention to the Indie makers and their products.
