Salman Khan: Another Jail Yatra
In 1998 Salman killed a Chinkara deer. This is different from the Black Buck case, for which he has received a one year sentence, which his lawyers have appealed in the High Court.
Today, Salman was sentenced to 5 years for killing the Chinkara Deer. According to this NDTV report:
Bollywood Actor Salman Khan has been sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of hunting a Chinkara deer in 1998.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Brijendra Kumar Jain also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the actor.
Salman has been taken to the Jodhpur Central jail where he is likely to be lodged till Wednesday.
The courts are closed for the next two days after which his lawyers can apply for bail.
Salman’s lawyer told NDTV that they would study the judgement and re-appeal in the case.
Wildlife Act
The local court in Jodhpur found the actor and co-accused Govardhan Singh, the watchman of the farm where they went hunting, guilty under the Wildlife Act.
The actor was present in court when the verdict was delivered.
The watchman has been sentenced to one year in jail and fined Rs 5,000.
Salman has already been sentenced to a year’s imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 in another Chinkara case.
Harsh punishment
The verdict against Salman is one of the few instances in the history of environmental crimes that such a harsh punishment has been awarded to the guilty.
Only poacher and illegal trader in tiger skins, Sansar Chand, has been awarded a five-year sentence. His case is still pending in a Jaipur court.
Under the Wildlife Protection Act (1972), the killing of endangered animals like the black buck and the chinkara or the gazelle, can be sentenced upto seven years in prison and upto Rs 25,000 as fine.
Both the animals are protected under Schedule 1 of the Act.
Cases against Salman
Controversy has always dogged Salman. On February 17, 2006, he was sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of Rs 5,000 was imposed on him for killing two blackbucks in Jodhpur in 1998.
He has a month to appeal against the sessions court verdict.
Four cases have been registered against the actor in Jodhpur. These include three poaching cases and one Arms Act case.
The actor is accused of poaching 3 chinkaras and one black buck over a period of 6 days.
In the first case, the actor is accused of killing a chinkara on September 27, 1998. Five other people are said to be involved in the killing.
On September 28, 1998, Salman killed two chinkaras along with co-actor Satish Shah.
The verdict in this case was delivered in Feburary 2006, wherein a suspended sentence of 1 year in jail and Rs 5,000 fine was passed.
Apart from this, an Arms Act case is registered against Salman for using a gun without licence.
So until Wednesday, Salman-jee will be kept in jail when the courts reopen. Ridiculous? Deserving? You tell me…

Though I am happy that the courts are dealing strictly with the entire Wildlife Protection thingee, I still feel that they are just trying to gain too much publicity by cornering Salman Khan. He has sort of become the poster-boy for trouble!
Also looks like the biker dude Johny-boy is in some trouble. I just want to kick his ass for ruining a gorgeous bike.

riduculous.. that it took so long for the case.. deserving? Yes ofcourse! I hope the Blackbuck and the drunken driving case also have a similar ending. So is he in VIP room or with the ‘other’ inmates singing “Hum Saath Saath hain”?

- Manoj, Controversy thy name is Salman Khan. Yep I do believe this is politically motivated drama. But how stupid stupid stupid would Salman’s lawyers would have had to be to have the judge pass a 5 years sentence.
- Pavan, I don’t think he’ll get a VIP room or anything like that until his lawyers file for such. But ofcourse it all depends on the Jailor of the Jodhpur Central Jail to extend what facilities and amenities that he may want to, to Salman. Ummm perhaps a sad Salman song is in order for today. Yet I wonder why this Uttam Kumar song from Amanush is ringing in my head “Dil aisa kisi ne mera toda, Barbadi ki taraf aisa moda… ek bhale maoos ko, Amanush bana ke choda…”

to hell with the judgment, salman khan rocks..and his case is just politically dramatized…i think that as there are some people trying to prove his innocence ,there are some people who are trying to take advantage of his fame…
5 years…forget it ..it’s not justice…it can’t be..

The punishment is well deserved. It is high time that the criminal elements in Bollywood are cut to size.

TOI seems to think that the problem is not with Sallu but the number of letters in his name.
