Crashing into the Sunset

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005
Mom and Dad had a dream. Still do. Actually they still hope that dream turns to reality. The dream’s foundation was laid the day you were born. The dream was built brick by brick. It first started in trying to teach you at the age of 2 and some odd months, A B C, and by the age of 3 and some months you were the recipient of your first “slap” when you would forget “7” while counting from 1 to 10. Later in school you were pushed to “top” the class and your neighbors loved how brilliant you were. They however did have a hard time, what with having to wake up to your cries early in the morning ...

Where is RKFilms.com?

Tuesday, November 29th, 2005
What happened to RK Films? Raj Kapoor’s company had a website www.rkfilms.com. Either they have forgotten about it or have lost all interest in maintaining it. Cause clicking on the link above leads to website which seems to have bought the rkfilms domain or had the domain name of RKFilms falling into its lap. What’s up with that? I don’t intend to be rude, but have to ask this - Are the Kapoors too busy involved in working on their children’s filmi careers, managing Prithvi and what else, that they don’t have time to maintain a website which tells us and the future generations of the legacy of Raj Kapoor and the mesmerizing movies made under the RK Banner? And ...

IFFI honors Hrishida

Tuesday, November 29th, 2005
The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is currently being held in Goa. It ends on my birthday and you end up feeling like being shown a box of the loveliest goodies a week before your birthday and on the day of your birthday the box is shut down and taken away. Damn you people…Raja Sen of Rediff is reporting from the festival and is blogging about it here. Inspite of all the controversies happening all around the IFFI – (Bachchans boycotting it, Gulshan Grover trashing it, Press unhappy with not being giving sufficient attention, etc. etc.) – the one greatest moment at the IFFI which no one can take away is the festival’s ...

Mr. Cop now Miss Cop

Monday, November 28th, 2005
Debendra Kumar Panda, the Uttar Pradesh - Inspector General of Police, yes the top guy in a state just below a mantra and his suntri – is in the news. Reason….ahem…his picture here can best explain what the situation is. In short he claims to now dedicate his entire life to Lord Krishna and calls himself “doosri Radha”… I have nothing against the picture nor against his statements in the press. Perhaps he’s blessed with revelations of the Ultimate Truth. He’s blessed…or perhaps he’s gone plain crazy. Whatever be the case…would someone please advise him to first step down as the top cop of U.P. and then follow his religious pursuits or crazy ...

A sick Hollywood movie

Monday, November 28th, 2005
Movies are means of entertainment for me. So I despise Strip Clubs. Movies are a form of communication; I put my heart and soul, to listen to. So I hate listening to Politicians’ bhashans about rations. Movies are my journey into fantasy land, sometimes so believable, sometimes not, but nevertheless an inspiring journey. So I refuse to take another dive at parachute jumping. But when comes a movie, which you watch it for it’s entire length of 109 minutes, finish viewing it, dial a number, seek an appointment and the next day you are sitting on the heavy cushion chair at your therapist’s clinic, you can’t help but wonder, if this means the end of ...

Friday Rants

Friday, November 25th, 2005
Friday and here in office. About to wrap up and leave. For the last 3 days my damn right side headache has followed me. Someone at lunch said “It’s a migrane” – so that’s it after years and years of suffering the sometime right, sometimes left side pain in the head, it has finally been revealed. That I too, get migraines. And for the last so many years I had been under the false impression that it is my outrageous overdone sexual activity – with partner or alone that gave me these headaches. Damn it. All this time I had been blaming mini-me for this. And then there’s the stepping into winter, darkness by 4pm and lights ...

From Hollywood, December 2005

Friday, November 25th, 2005
I must be one of the very few in US today (day after Thanksgiving), who has to work. Though the only two screens open on my pc are a word doc and Internet Explorer stationed at http://movies.yahoo.com. VOILA!!! Hollywood seems to have reserved it’s best for December 2005. Here’s what I find exciting – Aeon Flux: Releasing on – December 2nd, oz enthusiasm rate – 4/10 Synopsis from Yahoo: “Set 400 years in the future in a world where humans have nearly been wiped out by a virus and the remains of mankind live in a city encased in a protective bubble, Aeon Flux, an acrobatic superheroine, is assigned to kill the government leader.” Why ...

Good Bye…Mr. Miyagi

Friday, November 25th, 2005
Mr. Miyagi has gone to sleep. Forever. Actor Pat Morita as the ever lovable Mr. Miyagi from “The Karate Kid” and its sequels… has passed away. Though I could never get past the orange belt in Karate-ka, it was the towering influence of Morita’s Mr. Miyagi which had me entering a dojo for the first time. The thrill of learning Okinawa Meibukan Gojuro Karate Do…was heady…though I unfortunately could not become another “Daniel-san”, courtesy the kicks on my ass by dear Dad which forced me to go back to try improving my scores in Algebra. One thing I do remember and always follow Mr. Miyagi’s advice to the letter is that of - “Wax On, Wax Off” on my car. ...

Defending Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2005
And Rediff is back, backing its “favorite” ex-staff mate, Suparn Verma. Yes Blog reader-jee, even MSM have their own share of people they like, dislike and go to bed with. It is not just us, poor blog writers. And the topic of the interview is out and out – defending Suparn Verman’s latest flick Ek Khiladi Ek Hasina which Sirjee and Betelal had blogged about some time back. The interview looks like an outright damage control exercise. To Rediff’s question on how the audience is reacting to EKEH (shouldn’t Rediff be reporting on this question rather than asking Verma???) …I'm not watching the film anymore, I'm watching reactions… “I am not watching the film anymore”???? ...

The Sooraj Barjatya Interview

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2005
And the ever reclusive Sooraj Barjatya is back. I liked his interview on Rediff.com. His openness and frank opinions in the interview are a far cry from his shying away from the press and in turn, from us. From sharing his conclusions on the failure of his last movie (Main Prem ki diwani hoon) to what he’s enjoying in the recent crop of movies to talking about his next project “Vivah”, it was a treat. I loved the way he was candid in his likes and dislikes in the recent releases: I can't make Murder, but I liked the film. I could see the sincerity of the filmmaker. When Mallika (Sherawat) goes to pick ...

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2005
USKEE JAAT KA BAIDA MARU – Oh sorry didn’t realize you my “poojaniya” blog reader was already in, reading this…(hangover after watching a Mithun-da movie) - oh come in welcome. The topic of the day, sorry, night is - I HAVE A FUCKING HEADACHE. And please join me in telling the super Desi Programs relayed right to your homes courtesy dish network of HOW FUCKING STUPID THEIR PROGRAMS ARE. “Nah they’ll be better tomorrow”….YAH SURE!!!! FUCK IT!!!! HELL!!!! I’m gonna sue B4U music if they play the Sonu Nigam remix “Kajra Re” another time…Could someone please pray to B4U Music to have mercy on us…. On the other hand I have to admit the “Indian Idol” ...

Khiladi, Hasina & Confidence

Thursday, November 17th, 2005
Sirjee, I haven’t yet finished my chicken makhanwala…why do you want to leave right now? Betelal, this URGENT! We have to go home and check stuff out on the internet. NOW…Leave that damn chicken and rush home! What is into you Sirjee…India restaurant rarely serves us chicken which is not 26 or more days old….please let me finish this as this chicken makhawala looks like just a 14 or 15 day old dish and smells so fresh. Betelal, we will have committed the gravest of sins if we don’t rush now. The reason is the trailer of Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena which was just shown on the television of this restaurant. All this time it did not strike ...

Gulab Jamuns et. all

Wednesday, November 16th, 2005
How pleasing and joyful is it, to see a plethora of Desi restaurants floating all around Kallifornia (thank you Arnold jee). It’s a trend or perhaps a supply following the demand of - an increasing by the minute, Desi population in Kallifornia (thank you Arnold jee) and of course the ever increasing awareness and growing taste for Desi food amongst other cultures. Visiting San Jose reminds me of visiting a techno modern version of Chandni Chowk (for the sublimely ignorant, CC is in Delhi). Every other street has a Desi restaurant popping up. I hear Chicago and New Jersey are in a race to be named, Ameri-gadh (other recommendations include Ameri-nagar and H1aBad)…So densely are ...

Ek Ajnabee meets Man on Fire

Sunday, November 13th, 2005
Sirjee, I just watched the promos of Apoorva Lakhia’s Ek Ajnabee and I’m pumped up. My blood’s boiling, my hands are shaking, my body shivering from the intense nervous anticipation that Bollywood has done it…achieved the goal of making an engrossing thriller. But there is this nagging thought disturbing me… Betelal, you do look like a choosela (sucked up) mango. Show me the promos of Ek Ajnabee and I will free you from the shivering, shaking, nagging and whatever else is going on in your mind and body. (12.34 minutes later) Indeed Betelal. It does leave a nagging thought. But this usually happens when Bollywood “lifts” a basic story idea from Hollywood and infuses it with its ...

An open letter to James Yumnam

Friday, November 11th, 2005
Update 1: Is this you Mr. Yumnam? Should I take this picture off because (a) This is not you (damn I suck at investigations) (b) You are still under some covert secret operations which involves busting the balls of some more bloggers. Huh? Update 2: As to your comment that Desi Bloggers emulate American Bloggers, could you please check with Thakela of India's owners, whose son was sent in the late eighties/ early nineties to "train" at the New York Times, so he could "emulate" the management style and work culture of NY Times. When after the training, the people at NY Times asked him what he had learnt, the answer was "You ...
