I had blogged sometime back about my ventures into the Secret Pickup Community, the various famous underground personalities and the top quality skills which were taught to enable any man to pickup any woman he approached.

One of the persons I met was Style (I used “S” to refer to him in my blog then). Style is referred to as one of the best pickup artists in the world having picked up Playmates of the year when they were book-shopping, porn stars to famous personalities like Brittany Spears. I was enamored by his aura when I met him on a hot May Sunday at the roof top of The Standard hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. Style was a plain shaved head, five foot six thin guy, whom girls would not even give a second look. But there he was with one Lisa, one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen. Who is Style? Well Style is the community name he went by with.

His real name is Neil Strauss. Neil is (actually was) a New York Times writer (he now writes for Rolling Stone) and a co-writer of biographies from Motley Crew to the superstar of porn – Jenna Jameson. When he told me that he was writing a book about his experiences in pickup and the underground pickup community I was all ears. It would be a pretty exciting one I was sure. Neil had seen it all from the closest of angles. He had stayed and lived with the Gurus of Pickup. There were stories to be told, questions to be answered, veils to be lifted of mysteries…and Neil does it all in “The Game”. Using the same techniques used in the field used by PUAs (Pick up artists), Neil sucks the reader in.

For readers not familiar with the Pickup community, they may feel alienated in the initial pages for lack of knowledge of the community and its jargon, but not for long. Also since they are unfamiliar with the famous Pick up Gurus, they may miss the excitement in the sleek introduction of some of these gurus in the book.

Average Frustrated Chump, AFC. The lingo for average men like you and me who get weak knees when they see a beautiful woman whom they should approach but never will. AFC. The men who will do the dorkiest of things thinking it’s the most romantic, never realizing that it actually turns the woman off. AFC…that’s what Neil was 3 years ago (and I still have an itsy bitsy tiny part of me still dipped in the AFC pool). All that changed when Neil was given an assignment to write on the Secret Underground Pickup community which no one in the outside world knew about. This community regularly met on the internet to discuss just one thing – pickup.

Meet Mystery. The one stop shop for everything you wanted to know about pickup and become a Pickup Artist. Mystery was the king. Still is. Neil and a few others land up at Mystery’s workshop he holds in Los Angeles. And the bond of friendship between Neil and Mystery begins. The community soon realized the depth and range Neil has and is bringing into the online community by his creative inputs via his posts online. Soon Neil is accompanying Mystery to his various workshops all around the U.S. and Europe. And there comes a night in Miami where Neil comes into his own and that evening is recorded as one of the best pickups in the community (check out how a desi was witness to this event when Neil’s star rose high and bright that night in Miami).

You also bear witness to how two of the now famous pickup gurus were taught by Neil and Mystery and how ironically it laid the foundation to split the pickup community into various pieces. The introduction of Tyler Durden, who wants to learn pickup, rings Mystery’s doorbell in Canada when Neil is desperately trying to get a handle on Mystery’s acute depression, - that is nothing short of a classic screenplay material. I think a few studios are already in discussion with Neil to turn this into a movie.

Tyler Durden was the man who according to the book causes the community to split. I’ve met TD personally and have personally been trained by him (have referred him in a few of my pickup blogs). Like Neil, I knew there was something about him which bothered me, but in the wave after wave of pick up knowledge being thrown at me, I would either forget or turn a blind eye to it.

And you’ll meet famous Hollywood personalities whom Neil came across during his 2 years of living in the pickup community. Like “Papa” (now one of Tyler Durden’s partners running their own business), who picks up Paris Hilton off a taco stand, or Tom Cruise who AMOGs Neil every time they meet (AMOG – Alpha male of the group, for further explanations, Neil explains it best).

The second half of the book is about Project Hollywood, where the pick up gurus including Neil get together under one roof to teach the world about the art and science of pickup. It’s Mystery’s idea and everyone likes it. But as Neil points out, it was the beginning of the end.

Guys may be shocked and some of the things mentioned in this book they may find almost impossible to believe. Well, each word in the book is true and as Neil states in the beginning there is not a thread of fiction in this book. Many incidents in the books have already been posted in the secret online communities as and when they happened.

On the other end, women may abhor this book. If anyone denies - this is how women start behaving when approached by a PUA – as stated in the book, if anyone denies that, then they are wrong. I know I was during my AFC days. But now when I use these pickup skills, I find women behaving exactly as mentioned in the book. No matter if the woman is single, married or has a boyfriend – they all behave the same. It’s what I call the female version of lust and it is no different from how men feel.

The dark side of this world may sadden you. I was. Neil shows how the whole process of pickup and the highs it gives a man, does nothing but suck him further into it. How men of all ages threw away their jobs, careers, dropped out of school/college to learn and master the pickup skills full time. No doubt. If you don’t check yourself this secret art can consume you. I guess the fault lies in the results itself. I know its ironic, but when an aspiring PUA soon learns and finds that he is able to get any beautiful woman on the streets, in the bar, in the club, in the mall, just about anywhere – right to his bedroom and the process is fun and….yes…easy…the thought consumes the new student and he wants more, more and more. As rightly pointed out by Neil, there is no way to fill up the hole.

Very appropriately, Sickboy blurts out to Neil towards the end “This place (Project Hollywood) is toxic. No one talks about anything else nor does anything else besides pickup. ….I’m out of here….”

The book also provides an inside view of those who are magnificently efficient to post various creative pickup theories online which are gobbled up by everybody but in reality these very persons have not been able to pickup women for months.

How Project Hollywood slowly decays and ultimately breaks up forms a very tragic piece for anyone involved in the pickup community. But in the end it frees Neil. In the end you find he was the only sane person around. He was the one person who kept a balance between his life and pickup and this helped him find the love of his life….Lisa.

But above all it is about Mystery the best PUA in the world. The genius with abundance of creativity to match illusion skills with David Copperfield, but on the other hand is someone who tragically suffers from acute depression time to time. After reading the book I realized most of the pickup gurus mentioned in the book have had abusive childhoods and the need to be loved is what started them on this pickup journey, yet tragically rejecting that very love when a woman would offer them, instead preferring to move on to the next pickup….a hole that one wonders, if - will ever be filled?

So will it help you become a PUA? The short answer to it is – it will help you begin the journey. Not make you a PUA. There is so much to learn from the book and elsewhere, it will take its time. A few weeks or perhaps a few months, but with constantly going out and trying these skills will shorten your journey to becoming a Master PUA. Whether you want to use it to find the love of your life or whether it’s to bring some beautiful woman into your bedroom, this book will help you begin the journey if you still haven’t.

But be careful. As Neil points out again and again showing examples of various PUAs who crashed and burned, be careful, don’t let this skill consume you. Keep a balance and you will be fine.
