Leaving Sunday for 7 days of vacation. The place I'm going to is so secluded, my hotel doesn't have internet service.
Good for me. Switching off my cell phone, no internet, no calls, no blogs, no emails...just pure bliss, though I hope and pray that I don't meet tigers or bears who look at me as if I'm some delicious breakfast while I'm searching for my breakfast. That reminds me, I should rent a jeep with rock solid iron grills. It's the first vacation of my life where I'm not going sightseeing, not going to meet family or friends, not going to a tourist spot, just alone to a remote place I don't expect ...
Memories in Poetic Ink
Wednesday, September 21st, 2005
Reading poetry off the sites of my favorite bloggers - had me going through my stuff to search for a notebook, packed away far and deep in suitcases from India.
Until a few years ago this notebook would give me company almost every evening but as life took new routes, things changed and the less I saw this notebook. It’s been almost two years since I last saw it until last night. This notebook mirrors the journey (mostly dark) of my last two decades. I used to write poetry (mostly in Hindi) in here, and each poem reflects what I was going though, feeling, emoting through, that evening, in those moments when I ...
First Rains
Tuesday, September 20th, 2005
It’s raining here in So-Cal. The first of this season. Wet blue skies, thunder, lightning, clouds crawling at a lazy pace; in a way that one would roll on one’s bed on a weekend morning.
There’s a tinge of sweet depression. But then there’s always been one whenever it rains, ever since I can remember. Perhaps it reminds me as a 6 years old, alone at home and playing with a stick in the balcony of my house, not being able to go down and play with friends. Bombay rains :-) - they can put a curfew without police force. Early teens saw me attached to Gulzar’s works and rain became an integral part ...
Great Character Roles…(Part 2)
Friday, September 16th, 2005
Continuing the journey of the Greatest Character roles in Hindi Cinema, here’s a few from the remaining list of 11…
Utpal Dutt (Golmaal)
There are certain roles which if they had not existed in a movie, the story would crash like a pack of cards. And if the makers tried to pick up the pieces and build the story again they would never know where to start. “Bhavani Shankar†of Golmaal was one such brilliantly sketched character.
Going a step further, inspite of a perfectly sketched character, it takes an actor of par excellence to create the highest impact. Utpal Dutt was this actor. Bhavani Shankar would not have been “The Bhavani Shankar†as we know ...
The Greatest Character Roles from Bollywood…(Part 1)
Thursday, September 15th, 2005
There are movies. Then there are heroes. Then add a story writer, director, cinematographer etc. etc. Movies run, movies flop. It takes one Friday to decide the fate of the star/ rising star/ aspiring star and what have you, to shine or flop into the darkness.
But every once in a while comes a movie where someone else besides the hero (or heroine for that matter) shines far brighter than the others. The script just helped to push this “someone else†ahead of the leading actors. An author backed role or the genius of the actor or perhaps a mix of both these elements. Whatever it may be, you leave the movie with magical ...
Help a desi but don’t get screwed…
Monday, September 12th, 2005
After weeks, was I able to smile even in a tensed-have-to-beat-the-deadline pressure. It was a few weeks ago since I had helped my thankless-ex-Hyderabadi roommate by getting his cousin a job in my department.
Things had turned bad and he one fine morning had walked into my boss’s office, trashed my reputation and left the job. One good thing leads to another. Now my boss started thinking I was the evil guy in this case. I had tried my best to explain but then sometimes there are situations when however right and innocent you may be, you shall be pronounced guilty.
So my boss suggested the idea of getting Mr. Desi-who-screwed-me (DWSM) back. (My ...
Alpha Body Language…..Bollywood Ishtyle

Alpha Body Language. What in the hell is it? And why do I need it? The honest truth is you don’t….
Just like you don’t need to take a shower (your pal Raj was just moved to the ICU. Symptoms: sniffing the odor coming from your body for 8 hours at work); Just like you don’t need the restroom to pee (the mohalla kids have planned to group together to throw rotten eggs and tomatoes at you the next time they see you peeing at their sidewalk. No, no need for thanks. As you see I’m your shubh-chintak and if you need to borrow my umbrella for protection from the tomato-egg rain please do not ...

Fucking, the (ahem) Village
Thursday, September 1st, 2005
The f word. It could be part of your vocabulary or it may not. If it is you may laugh at this article. If the f word is not you would want to utter under any circumstance, it would interesting to see what would you say to the taxi driver if you wanted to visit Fucking village.
Katrina
Thursday, September 1st, 2005
Like many of the people in California - oblivious to what's happening on the east coast, I too thought that Katrina was just another one of those storms, blowing the hats off and moving ahead. In all foolishness I didn't once bother to read the news in print or media, content, and like so many others kept doing my own stuff in my own small world.
It was a shock, when I switched on the tele last evening to find the utter utter devastation and one of the greatest tragedies I've seen in my life. An ENTIRE CITY is wiped out. Vanished... nada... not there anymore. The city which attracted thousands of tourists every year, no longer ...
