Ismail Merchant: end of an era

O what a sad day for cinema lovers. The morning started with the news of Sunil Dutt bidding us his final farewell and now the news is that Ismail Merchant has passed away. Producer of many priceless films, joint partner in Merchant-Ivory making precious films for so many decades, Merchant primarily served as the producer whereas James Ivory directed the movies. Beginning with “The householder” to making features on India including “Shakespeare Wallah” (1965) , “The Guru” (1969) and then “Bombay Talkie” in 1970. His productions include such priceless pieces of art such as The Europeans, Quartet, Heat and Dust, A Room With a View, Mr. and Mrs. Bridge, Howards End, The Remains of the Day, Jefferson in Paris, and Surviving ...

Sunil Dutt is no more. The most human of all beings that we knew through cinema has left us…forever. I am dazed and numb from reading the news this morning and I almost find it hard to stop my tears. May his soul rest in peace. Dream Logic

What happens when you remember your dreams the next morning? The tone/mood of the dream becomes your mood throughout the day. For the last few days, I’ve been remembering each of my dreams and it is something I’m not prepared for. Last night it was Bill Gates interviewing me on a typical Delhi house in Chandni Chowk terrace, my parents standing behind me, and Gates questioning if I would (and this is very strange) move to Alaska to work for him for a ton of money. The weather - where we are talking - is cloudy, rainy type, but not raining, kind of like Seattle weather. I give Gates a positive nod to his question....
